Develop an Unstoppable Attitude in Life

Think about someone you view as having an unstoppable attitude. It could be a businessman you admire who has become an industry leader, or perhaps it’s a world-class sports hero. Maybe it’s someone you know personally who has overcome enormous trials and tribulations in life. What are some of the accompanying attributes and characteristics that this person holds?

While specific answers may vary depending on the individual, more than likely, the person you thought of can be described as having steadfast determination and has accomplished a considerable amount in life. President Thomas Jefferson stated, “nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude.”

When I think of President Jefferson’s words, I’m reminded of what it means to be a man of virtue and leader within the community. This is something we need now more than ever. We need more men to set noble goals and have the determination to see them through to the end.

Family units need more father figures to set a better example for children at home and positively influence those important developmental years. Communities need selfless leaders who are motivated to drive social change that benefits every member collectively. The nation needs leadership guided by a strong moral compass and acts in service to the citizens who elected them.

A moment ago, I asked you to think of someone who has an unstoppable attitude. Just as this person has demonstrated the ability to tap into this frame of mind to accomplish great things in life, each of us would do well to remember that it’s well within our reach to do the same. Like anything, we need to develop and strengthen this ability.

Here are three things we can do to help develop and strengthen an unstoppable attitude.

1) Gain clarity with what you want.

Get clear with what you want by setting a specific goal. Utilize the SMART Goal method (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, time-based). This isn’t just reserved for big business goals. Use this approach in all areas of life.

Do you want to improve your overall health and get in better shape? If so, then get crystal clear with what that means for you. Do you want to make more money? If so, get clear with exactly how much more money you want to make and by when. It’s easy to become lackadaisical in our efforts when we don’t feel purpose-driven or feel lost in the shuffle when we’re not moving in a clear direction. Determine a definite aim that resonates with you and makes the goal official.

2) Focus on your objective.

Once you have a clear goal in mind, then it’s easier to concentrate your efforts. Make this a top priority. Eliminate distractions and wasteful activities that will only steal attention and energy from the efforts needed to bring you closer to the intended goal. Along the way, be sure to celebrate milestone achievements as you move closer towards completing your goal. Celebrating these minor victories helps to boost enthusiasm and will motivate you to keep moving forward.

This is a powerful way to strengthen resolve and develop the unstoppable attitude needed to drive forward, especially on those darker days when most would give up and go home.

3) Tap into key strengths.

Identify and utilize personal strengths that will help you achieve the task at hand. Just as a workman has a utility belt of tools needed for his trade, you have an arsenal of skills, talents, and abilities that can be used to accomplish this endeavor. Recognize your top strengths and employ them to amplify concentrated efforts. This sounds like common sense, but it happens to the best of us, where we overlook (or forget) that particular hidden ability that makes all the difference. If it helps your cause, do a strength-based assessment of skills inventory before beginning. Remember that time you bought that kitchen table or bookshelf and decided to put it together yourself? This would be the equivalent of finding the small highlighted section of the instruction manual that states, “you will need these tools to put this thing together.”

Just as Jefferson said, “nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude,” focus on these three target areas to become unstoppable with everything you pursue.

At the beginning of this writing, I encouraged you to think of someone you consider having an unstoppable life attitude. You thought of someone that has consistently demonstrated the ability to set and achieve goals through steadfast action. Adopt these three points as the gold standard of setting important goals in your life and position yourself as a man to be admired in professional and social circles.
